Warren Maroon grew up in Mitchell’s Plain on the Cape Flats, a place often defined by gang culture, drugs, and violence. From an early age, art became his refuge — a way to make sense of the world around him. He graduated from the Ruth Prowse School of Fine Art, Cape Town, in 2011, and in 2018 he discovered his true voice as a sculptor. Drawing on his lived experience as a person of colour, Maroon transforms found objects into sculptural narratives that speak of inequality, trauma, and survival. His arte povera-inspired aesthetic allows everyday materials to carry the weight of memory and experience, reshaped into stories that demand attention. A recurring thread in his work is the glorification of gangs and violence, a reflection of the pressures on youth in disadvantaged communities and the media that perpetuates these myths. Through his sculptures, Maroon invites viewers into a world where resilience, reflection, and the raw truths of life on the Cape Flats are powerfully rendered.
