Brett Charles Seiler was born in Zimbabwe and currently lives and works in Cape Town. He attended the Ruth Prowse School of Art, graduating in 2015. Seiler’s earlier, more experimental works incorporated found objects and old photographs, while his recent practice centres on painting, performance, and installation. Seiler has developed a distinctive visual language that employs a subtle, monochromatic palette reminiscent of black-and-white photography. His work explores the male body through fleeting depictions of affection, romance, and intimacy. The inclusion of text amplifies the narratives conveyed by his male subjects, infusing the work with tones of nostalgia, anxiety, sentimentality, and occasional humour. Through his art, Seiler reflects on his own experiences as a gay man, examining Queer identity, sexual oppression, and gay history, while continuing to question the broader landscape of gay rights and representation.
