Alson Zuma has been drawing for as long as he can remember. A self-taught artist, his first “canvases” were the pages of his school textbooks — a habit that got him into considerable trouble as a schoolboy. While working for a local farmer in the Natal Midlands, Zuma took a job tending livestock. During breaks he would sketch with a ballpoint pen on the bag he used to carry his lunch, and in the evenings he filled his cottage window with his drawings. His employer, David Fox, noticed these works and encouraged him to pursue his art further. In the late 1980s, Zuma moved to Fort Nottingham, where he continues to live and work. He is currently based at the Fort Nottingham Museum, where he remains dedicated to his craft and to documenting the rhythms of rural life through drawing.
