Originally from Zimbabwe and now based in Cape Town, Edinah Chagwedera is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans sculpture and painting. Her work is deeply personal, informed by her own experiences with mental health, and explores themes of vulnerability, despair, and displacement, always illuminated by an enduring current of hope. Her work challenges the stigmas surrounding mental health, particularly within black communities, transforming pain into empathy and connection. In contrast, her brightly coloured clay balloon sculptures, faceless beneath clusters of red balloons, speak to concealment and resilience—anonymity as both burden and protection. Poignant and courageous, Chagwedera’s practice signals the rise of a compelling new voice in contemporary African art, one that bridges personal truth and collective healing.
