Bonita Alice studied at the University of the Witwatersrand and the University of Cape Town, South Africa, and taught in several fine art departments until 2003. After spending 12 years in London, she returned to South Africa in 2020, bringing a rich international perspective to her studio practice. Her work is informed by animal studies, psychology, and psychoanalysis, exploring the complex bonds between humans, animals, and the environment. Central to her practice is a concern with the crises of our time — environmental degradation, collective denial, and the psychological mechanisms that obscure human responsibility. In her recent wool-dust drawings, Alice transforms transience and fragility into poetic form. The lattice structures evoke confessional or harem screens, spaces of separation and reflection, while the soft, ephemeral wool dust suggests protection, vulnerability, and the delicate balance between intimacy and loss. Through these works, Alice interrogates both human and ecological fragility, offering a subtle meditation on memory, repression, and our shared world.
