Born in Mexico City in 1982, Georgina Gratrix grew up in Durban and lives and works in Cape Town. She graduated from the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, in 2005, specialising in painting. Gratrix is known for her expressive, impasto style that combines humour and sentiment with a vivid exploration of portraiture and still life. She has presented solo exhibitions at major South African institutions, including The Cult of Ugliness at the Irma Stern Museum (2022), The Reunion at Norval Foundation (2021), and This Must Be The Place at the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts (2021). Internationally, she has exhibited at Proyectos Monclova, Mexico City; Monica De Cardenas Gallery, Milan; and Nicodim Gallery, Los Angeles. In 2018, Gratrix received the Discovery Prize at Art Brussels and the Ampersand Fellowship Award, which included a residency in New York. She has also undertaken residencies in Oaxaca, Mexico, and at the Irma Stern Museum in Cape Town. Her work is held in significant public and private collections locally and abroad.
