William Kentridge studied Political Science at the University of the Witwatersrand in the late 1970s before moving to Paris in the early 1980s to study mime, experiences that continue to inform his multifaceted artistic practice. Refining his exceptional draughtsmanship at the Johannesburg Art Foundation, Kentridge gained international acclaim for his stop-frame animations of the 1990s and large-scale installations of the early twenty-first century, powerfully exploring the enduring effects of colonialism and oppression. A prolific exhibitor and theatre practitioner, Kentridge has staged major productions both locally and internationally and received numerous awards and honours. Renowned for merging drawing, theatre, film, and political thought, he stands as one of the most influential figures in contemporary African art, creating work that is intellectually rigorous, visually compelling, and profoundly human.
