Erik Laubscher was born in 1927 in Tulbagh and grew up in Port Elizabeth. He showed an early interest in art and began formal studies under Maurice van Essche at the Continental School of Art in 1946. Encouraged to continue his training abroad, he left for London, studying first with the portrait artist Frank Slater, and later in a more stimulating environment at the Anglo-French Art Centre. In 1950, Laubscher moved to Paris, where he enrolled at the Académie Montmartre and studied under Fernand Léger, who would have a lasting influence on his work. It was there that he met his future wife, Claude Bouscharain. Upon returning to Cape Town in 1951, Laubscher quickly established himself, mounting a solo exhibition at The Argus Gallery. The couple’s home at 6 Cheviot Place, Sea Point, became an important social and creative hub for Cape Town’s artists and writers. In 1971, Laubscher founded the Ruth Prowse School of Art, which he directed for 25 years, while continuing to pursue his own artistic practice.
