Born in 1960 in Cape Town, Katherine Glenday discovered her vocation in ceramics under the mentorship of Marietjie van der Merwe. She has since pursued an unwavering exploration of porcelain’s expressive potential, refining time-honored techniques through collaboration with master ceramicists worldwide. Glenday’s work, informed by painting and drawing, emphasizes organic textures on skin-like surfaces. Her delicate vessels stretch porcelain to its thinnest, allowing light to pass through, while their silhouettes capture the artist’s gesture and movement. Employing wheel-throwing, slip casting, and natural pigments sourced from rivers and claylands, she treats the vessel as a circular, kinetic canvas, combining color, texture, and light. Her practice balances visceral formation and meditative quality, often guided by intuition. In recent series, Glenday explores positive and negative space, echoing the abstract energy of Franz Kline, with black brush-like gestures that create a dynamic interplay of light and shadow, completing a cohesive and expressive body of work.
