Mbulelo Terrance Lokoto (b. 2000) is a Cape Town–based visual artist who graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art from the Ruth Prowse School of Art, specialising in painting. His passion for art began in childhood but was interrupted by limited resources. Nearly two decades later, he returned to drawing and painting as a way to cope with severe depression, an act that reignited his creative path and continues to shape the emotional depth of his work. Lokoto’s figurative practice gives voice to the individuals he portrays, preserving personal and culturally significant narratives, including themes of Hlubi identity and street Pantsula culture. His paintings often explore the concept of a “spirit animal,” merging species to reflect layered identities, in a style he describes as magical surrealism. Warm colour palettes convey a longing for joy, while recurring animal symbolism comments on traits, nicknames, and mirrored qualities of his subjects. In 2025, he undertook a printmaking residency at EDITION Basel, further expanding his technical and conceptual range.
