Cathy Abraham is a South African artist specializing in process-based art. She earned an MFA with Distinction from the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Arts in 2018, culminating in the solo exhibition A Deeper Kind of Nothing. Her multidisciplinary practice spans film, mixed media, installation, painting, and sculpture, guided by the needs of each project. Abraham employs repetitive gestures to explore patterns in daily life, blurring the boundaries between reality, fantasy, and illusion. She refers to the repeated brushstrokes in her work as “ghosts,” symbolizing trauma’s lingering presence. These are often numbered according to the Kabbalah, challenging conventional notions of time and space by merging past, present, and future. Through symbolism, ritual, and numerology, Abraham transforms personal and collective pain into powerful visual narratives, establishing herself as a significant voice in contemporary South African art.
